The connection between the urban world of human society, and the natural world, since the industrial revolution, has been remote and widening.
The paradox is that there has never been a time when more people are out-of-touch with the natural world, then there is now.
We are now so numerous; so powerful; so all-pervasive, the mechanisms we have for destruction are so wholesale, we can actually exterminate entire ecosystems without even noticing it.
Sir David Attenborough, Naturalist
This increases the need for health education.
Knowledge and understanding of earth and human health would be the best place to start, to help ourselves. Without knowledge and understanding it is difficult to value earth and physiological health. Opinion and belief are of little use when it comes to taking care of the environment and our health.
Earth and Health Literacy
We are not born with the knowledge of the natural world or of human health. That education is not available presently to individuals, or for health and medical professionals in Canada. We are health illiterate because there is no definitive, coherent language for us to use to communicate with each other about health; to educate ourselves; nor does a comprehensive system exist for the evaluation of health, and for practical application.
If Canada included health in its' education system, it would be the first country in the history of human civilization, and on the planet, to do so.
Health education must include the knowledge and tools necessary for:
- healthy physiological function
- the maintenance of health
- physical structural integrity
- healthy habit formation
The necessary education, and practical application of health are supplied by the 13 BASIC HEALTH HABITS.

Physiological Health
The human body is an ecosystem of complementary, co-dependent, and cooperative systems, functioning together to maintain health, and designed to heal itself. Regarding our personal health care, our primary behaviour should involve the support of these natural functions with the practise of the 13 Basic Health Habits. Neglect of Basic Health Habits leads to physical deterioration, malfunction, a cascade effect of health complications, and finally, to disease. Physiological health relates only to an intact, fully functional, flesh and blood body. Our behaviour has now impacted the human genome.

Canada ranks 24th out of 25 developed countries for environmental health and sustainability.
A 2010 study: The Maple Leaf in The OECD, conducted by Simon Fraser University, rated the environmental record of the 25 developed countries belonging to the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), using 28 environmental indicators.
Canada is Ground Zero For Health
According to the World Health Organization's 2011 Report on Disease in Canada, Canadians are leading the worldwide epidemic of chronic disease, and in 2013, 29.3 billion dollars was spent on prescription drugs; 36% of Canadians take two or more prescription drugs, among the highest of the 11 other OECD countries surveyed. I am alarmed by what I see here in Canada. I identify the unhealthy western lifestyle as the largest and most dangerous health experiment in human history - and I would say that we are clearly getting the results of this experiment. If we want to continue on this unhealthy course, we will need to develop increasingly complex medical, pharmaceutical, genetic, and technological treatments.
Health is the missing consideration. If health has an equal place alongside critical care and cure, profit and progress; better choices are made, and the benefits are more comprehensive and sustainable.
HEALTH COACH proposes that a healthy environment and healthy citizens are the most profitable choice individually, and collectively.
As cities and, in some cases, entire nations weather the pandemic under lockdown, Earth-observing satellites have detected a significant decrease in the concentration of a common air pollutant, nitrogen dioxide, which enters the atmosphere through emissions from cars, trucks, buses, and power plants. The drop, observed in China and Europe, coincided with stringent social-distancing measures on the ground. Air pollution can seriously damage human health, and the World Health Organization estimates that conditions stemming from exposure to ambient pollution—including stroke, heart disease, and respiratory illnesses—kill about 4.2 million people a year.
The cleaner air could lead to a brief respite in parts of the world with severe air pollution even as they battle the coronavirus. According to an analysis by Marshall Burke, a professor in Stanford’s Earth-system science department, a pandemic-related reduction in particulate matter in the atmosphere—the deadliest form of air pollution—likely saved the lives of 4,000 young children and 73,000 elderly adults in China over two months this year.
Noise pollution can (also) negatively affect our health, contributing to stress-related ailments, high blood pressure, sleep disruption, and other problems. Four Ways the Coronavirus is Changing the Planet
Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens
Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.
